Mixed Doubles Tournament 2012
Tournament Day 8
Hello Irvington Club Member,
Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships
Wednesday night I kind of felt like Bill Murray’s weather reporter character in the movie, “Goundhog Day”. Remember? Every day things kept repeating themselves from the day before. Here we had Nick and Natalia cruising to another alluring win. There were Tracy and Joel using more than their allotted court space to track anything and everything down and advance. There was the Human Highlighter, Jan Rothert (think fluorescent pink felt pen colored shirt) playing again, and again…and again. And lastly, in front of three sleeping fans, the final déjà vu. At the stroke of midnight (read Day 6), the last ball fell, just out of reach, ending Sharon and Jonathan’s dance, sending them home, in a pumpkin.
This column this week has mentioned much about athletic prowess and skill, but as we all know, it’s the mental side of the game that most influences the outcome. Prior to their 5:00 match, as Blythe and her partner approached the Court 2 bench, a spectacled Terry Gariety looked up from the book he was pretending to read, The Inner Game of Tennis. (Check). As Terry slyly smiled Blythe’s partner asked him if he had any other mind games to play on them before their match started. “It’s my birthday,” he says. (Checkmate). This was over before it started. Terry and his partner, Super Lobber Denise Townsend, psychologically and emotionally destroyed Blythe’s partner, and all she could do was shake her head in disgust at his weakness as Terry and Denise used a combination of brains and high balls to make it official and celebrate the win. Happy Birthday,Terry.
David Finkelman played by far more points than any other guy last night. He and his wife, Alyssa Rose, went two long sets and a tiebreak before going down to Fahey and Radford in a 7.0 quarterfinal. Immediately following, Fink teamed with Amy Alpern and again went two long ones and a tie break, but this time came out victorious in an 8.0 quarter over stubborn Quisling and Harms. A good loss, followed by a great win.
The darkhorse team of V and Noriko was finally halted by Clint and Donna. They shook off an opening set bagel to win the 2nd set and push it to a 3rd. Clint and Donna got their mojo back and won the tie breaker to vault them into the semis.
Tonight is going to be HUGE! The marquee match, of course, will be the Mixed Mary Moreland Invitational, featuring Mary herself paired with Soren Coughlin-Glaser against those sandbagging pros, Cris and Walter at 6:30. The remaining matches will get your attention, too. All semifinals, all night long. All your friends will be there. Beer will flow. You can’t miss this! Check out the line up below and come on out!

Tournament Day 7
Hello Irvington Club Member,
Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships
Did you see Nick and Natalia on Court 1 last night? Holy crap! Skill. Charm. Good looks. This glamour pairing has it all. They have to be front-runners from here on out in the 9.0+. I think the only grouping who could have any possibility of taking these two out are Tonya Harding, Jeff Gillooly, and a two-foot section of leaded pipe. Good luck to you other 9.0+ teams.
A 5:00, 7.0 match brought this years first opportunity to form the cliché coupling of names to form one Hollywood moniker. From this point forward in this column Gary and Tara will be known as the “Chindricksons”. As often as they win it’s just easier than writing their full names out all the time. They won again last night and the Vegas line still has them as favorites in this draw.
A Court 4, 6.0 match brought the veritable “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” quandary to Paul Laurent. In this year’s first husband vs wife showdown Paul had to make the tough decision. Win and sleep in Lars and Monique’s basement, or lose and suffer the heckling from his drill buddies next Saturday. Paul thought this through and saw a way out. He threw the match and immediately pointed out to his friends that he didn’t really lose to his wife. He lost to Tom Lux, who beats everybody. Which is true.
After a 7.0 win with Matt Fahey, who’s racquet unbelievably did not purposefully leave his hand once, Shawn Radford has now officially gone farther in her tournament bracket than her husband Mark did during March Madness in 1981. Sorry, Mark. That last second loss to Kansas State was painful for all of us Beavers.
Those who stayed late got to see the “Show” of Rob Nelson pitch
Curveball-after-unreturnable-curveball to Mary Elliott and her son, Elliott. But when Rob went to the bench in between points to dip into his fourth pouch of Big League Chew (yet another product placement endorsement), Mary called a balk and Rob couldn’t find an umpire to appeal to. Elliotts ended up being the ones to go the distance in extra innings, 15-13 winners in the tiebreaker. (I promise no more baseball references after this)
Tonight many matches are in quarterfinal territory and the tension is mounting. The 5:00 Bardell/Ankeny vs. Boose/Porter match is going to rock. The others around them are not so bad either. The 6:30s I can’t even describe my anticipation for. 8:00? Speechless. You need to see them, not just read about them. Come on out and stay to the end, when after a late night raffle the 9:30s will have McGinnis’s, Rockers, Johnsons, and Rothert's all over the place. Be there.

Tournament Day 6
Hello Irvington Club Member,
Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships
At the stroke of midnight, as the last ball fell, just out, Day 5 came to a quiet end. For two hours Tod Breslau and Mary Logsdon had refused to stay out of Harm’s way and weathered out a third set tiebreak win over Jonathan, and Sharon Malin. It was not without drama, as the bandaged Breslau fought through injury to…huh? What? That’s not a wound dressing on his head? Oh, sorry. Yes, now I can see it’s just a really wide headband. My bad.
Speaking of accessories, around all of the great tennis, the talk of the night in the stands was the new to-die-for pink ruffled skirt sported by Leslie Ballard. It was quite the rage of many of our lady observers, who were taken by the eye catching color, supple layering, and the fabric stretch that allowed freedom of movement without flashing too much skin when digging for those low volleys. Apres-match it displayed a contoured fit over black sweats. Her ensemble, and her partner Adam Rothert were a winning combination.
In other court fashion news, in an 8.0, 6:30 match, opponents Gordy Osaka and Adam Huthinson each wore nearly matching banana yellow Nike Dry Fit shirts. These were quite helpful visuals to their female counterparts, Susan Goll and Janelle Laurila, who’s pre-match strategy already was to “hit it at the guy”. Janelle aimed well just a little more often as she and Adam pulled out the “W”.
A 9:30, 9.0+ showdown featured the return of Bill Malloch, with his daughter Lucy, taking on Lainie Block-Wilker and Brian Quisling. The strategy for all three of them was to keep it away from Bill. If only Bill would have stayed out of Lucy’s way the outcome may have been different. They Mallochs fell to a tough, tough team. I know the smart Yale man that Bill is will learn from this.
In another father/daughter 9.0+ pairing, it took Toby and Katy Krauel until the 3rd game of the 2nd set to finally hit one out. Just because Toby’s a pro doesn’t mean can’t miss one now and then so the rest of us can feel better about ourselves. Janelle was in this match too, but she had trouble tracking the Krauels without yellow on. Krauels win.
Deadline looms so only time for one more match to mention. It had our own Cris Valverde and Jana Corder against Jamie Fenner and Susan Goll (again) in a late night 9.0+ smack down. After dropping the first set to Fenner/Goll, Cris decided to play more like Jamie, which was more effective that playing like himself as they turned the table and won the 2nd set. The 3rd set tie breaker had Cris/Corder comfortably ahead 9-4 and serving for the match. Three minutes later they were uncomfortably behind 9-10. OMG! The twelve fans remaining were in shock and Cris looked like Cindy Brady when the red TV camera light came on. While he stared blankly into the backdrop Jana, with nerves of freaking steel, hammered Susan’s match point serve down the line behind the early moving Fenner to tie it back up. Awesome! The crowd roars snapped Cris out of is daze and he returned to serve out the match. Wow.
Let me now compliment the fans, whose numbers for a Monday night were off the chart. Thanks to all for coming out to support your players. Tonight features the return of Stella on tap for $3 a cup, and yes, some great tennis too. As the winners win each night grows more intense and entertaining. There are big matches all night. Check the line up for your favorites and come on out.

Tournament Day 5
Hello Irvington Club Member,
Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships
Seven-Six, Six-Seven, Twelve-Ten. You can’t script this kind of stuff. No one would believe it. You had to see it. It doesn’t really matter who the players were, who won, or who lost. It was just about tennis, great fans, and perseverance on both sides. But since you’re dying to know, it was a sphincter tightening, third set tie breaking, three match point saving, by the skin of their teeth win for Blythe and Ron over Pam and Lars. These four friends, teammates, and rivals continually brought out the best in each other. It couldn’t have been closer. Lest Lars have any ideas, Ron could be heard walking off the court mutter, “there will be no rematch.”
In an earlier 8.0 match on Court 4 Keith Johnson had the pleasure of playing with his daughter Grace, who after a year off from tennis surprised Rebecca Jacobs with unexpected down-the –line power to open game one and put Rebecca on her heals. Ron Selis, Jacob’s partner, was further repressed by Keith’s huge lefty bender serve repeatedly into the wall, for which Ron has an aversion. However, Jacobs dug their team out of an early hole and as they neared victory, Keith resorted a distraction technique he often uses when he’s behind. During the last changeover he pulled his portable Karaoke machine out of his bag and crooned a dead on rendition of Barry White’s “Ecstasy.” Ron was mesmerized by Keith’s low octave, but Grace was just embarrassed by her father’s groove attempt. Rebecca put the match away next game while Ron was requesting an encore.
So far this reporter can only personally write of these two matches as they are the only ones he witnessed up close. Fortunately, credible sources informed me of some other stellar performances up and down the courts last night.
The 3:30 time slot featured the return of none other than our own front desk legend and original court reporter, Adam Hutchinson. He teamed with Janelle Laurila to hold off the super couple Brian and Tara Hendrickson in a third set tie breaker in a scintillating, crowd pleasing 8.0 Court 1 match. It’s great to have Adam back this week. Regarding 3.5 Tara, she is obviously underrated and for all of us at her level I will personally appeal the USTA for her promotion so we won’t have to play her in tournaments anymore.
Notable couple winners included the Browns, the Radfords, the Saha/Taggets, the Finkelman/Roses, the Steinhoff/Walkers, and most impressively the Vranizans in a frenetic Court 1 Senior 7.0 match (oxymoronic that the words “frenetic” and “Senior” can be used in the same sentence). Lori not only had to withstand the supremely aggressive net closures of Sam Rath, the deft touch of Mary Logsdon, but some mental lapses of her own husband Ed. It’s OK, Hulk. I understand.
Tonight is all winner’s brackets, all the time. Five o’clock hits for the cycle with a 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0+ match at once. Many teams will debut. Every time slot is packed. And prime time turns into late night with the first 9:30 matches of the tournament. Rumor has it that a raffle will happen. Could be gear, could be booze. As good as that sounds, it’s the tennis that will be worth sticking around for. Check the line up for your favorites and come on out!

Tournament Day 4
Hello Irvington Club Member,
They say for every storm there is a calm that precedes it. Saturday at the tournament was atypically tranquil. Fourteen matches flowed serenely throughout the day. Considering there were 11 married couples and a brother/sister combo, play was utterly peaceful.
Imagine the Karpinskis, after losing a close match to John Steinhoff and Janet Walker having to immediately return to play Tom and Wendy Weddle. Could they hold it together? By all means, these mellow matrimonial veterans were a vision of bliss. At one point Diane took a ball out of the air that was clearly going to go out and missed the shot. “I’m sorry,” she says to Al. “No problem,” says Al kindly. It’s so simple when your wife says she’s sorry. Let this be an example to us all. After surviving a spectacular string of Wendy winners in critical game eight of the 2nd set, victory was theirs to advance in the 7.0 Senior bracket.
The Karpinski’s daughter Erin obviously learned from her parents about tolerance and along with her husband Ben harmoniously handled another tough husband/wife team of Steve and Teresa Darling. Steve turned 60 just last week, but on one point he turned back the clock and scampered sideline to sideline and back again at a pace that you would have sworn he was 16 again, if not for the touch of grey. Great match to watch on court 1.
Kate Hunter somehow finagled the young and underrated Ben “Front Desk” Martin into the 8.0 bracket and manufactured a win against the sibling pairing of Mark and Julie McGinnis. These Irvington Club legacies know all the subtle nuances of the courts and rule bending. On one point Mark dumped and easy overhead into the net and claimed fluorescent light interference and requested a Mulligan, which he argued is allowed because he is Irish, even though this isn’t golf. Ben was not fooled and he and Kate finished off the match to advance to the next round.
Other highlights of the night had Cassie McVeety/Allan Warman take on Cathy Porter/Kelly Rea in a 7.5 match up. Hey, wait a minute. There’s no such thing as 7.5. Once the over qualification of the Porter/Rea team was discovered this became a “practice” match. We love the flexibility of this tournament. It was an entertaining match nonetheless and gave Cassie some Court 1 tournament experience, which seemed right up her alley, pun intended.
In the Super Senior division Munly/Ashley met Groff/Weddle. After winning the first set 6-4, Donia said, “I’m done.” Tom said, “I’m done.” Munly/Ashley said, “we’re done.” And they were all done. I like and am looking forward to this Super Senior rule that if you win the first set you can call it a night and join your friends for a drink in the stands.
Last note on the night is to watch out for the Gary Chin/Tara Hendrickson team, who after taking it against Jim Lang and Pat Nolan are looking like frontrunners in the 7.0 draw. No pressure.
OK. So much for the calm. Now (drum roll, cymbal crash), bring on the storm!
There are major clashes all day long, 17 in all. We want fans! The courts will be full from 2:30 til 10:00. We are in the meat of the 7.0 and 8.0 brackets now. You’ve got to see this action. There are fiery competitors here. Names like Radford, Hendrickson, Vranizan, and Finkelman all spoused up. A Topelmann vs Selis grudge match, dating back to “the Wall Incident.” Partners, hold them back! You’ll see the mother/son team of Kelly Fox and Jack Krauel, the father/daughter duo of Keith and Grace Johnson. You might spot the elusive Bill Malloch. Every match today on tonight has high interest and appeal. And, best of all, Budweiser (really, Budweiser?) on tap for only $2.00! Be there.

Tournament Day 3
Hello Irvington Club Member,
There is always a special vibe on the first Friday night of our club tournaments. After a long week of work, school, or napping by retirees like Tom Weddle, people are ready for action and the opportunity to buy Stella on tap for $3.00 (first product placement endorsement).
The opening 5:00 matches featured the Battle of the Calves on court 3. Rather than the customary racquet spin to determine first serve Paul Laurent and Ron Selis decided to compare gastrocnemius muscle sizes, biggest wins. Measurement showed an exact tie. Amy Alpern knew of an obscure tie breaking rule implemented during the 1977 Body Building World Championships that takes the ratio of calve muscle girth to total body height. Paul got first serve.
This match was interesting in that it started a string of intriguing revenge matches involving the Alpern/Porter family. Try to follow this: Blythe Knott carried Ron to a 7-5, 6-0 win over Paul and Amy. This bagel set angered Cathy Porter who was warming up on the next court with Ron’s son Chet. Cathy and Randy Boose commenced to take no mercy on young Chet and Mercedes Arntson, with Randy going so far as to attempt and complete the rare and crowd pleasing behind-the-back volley winner, and eventual 6-1, 6-0 victory (touché). Following this match, Leah Alpern, daughter of Amy and Cathy, lost a 9.0+ match to Jan Rothert. (There were two guys out there too, but they were more just filler. Some pro named Walter, and some club president named Dave). Jan was so comfortable during this match that she actually took some photos of herself during points. This, of course, incensed young Leah and in the following rematch against Jan in the 8.0 bracket (the guys don’t really matter at this point) she returned the favor and beat Jan. In the end the Alpern/Porters went 2-2 and felt good about their retaliation efforts. Jan went 1-1, looked good on film, and started the age-old debate about whether or not it’s a good idea to play with your spouse.
There were many other interesting matches throughout the night. Notable winners were Vilath Oudomphong and Noriko Satake in 8.0 over the mother/son pairing of Mary Elliot and Elliot Friedman. Mary and Elliot played well, but there was too much talent and drop-shotting from the other side. Watch out for these victors! They are out from under the radar.
In the closest match of the night, Pam and Lars Topelmann had their hands full with Tom Lux and Tracy Laurent in a 7.0 tilt. Lux/Laurent were down 0-5 and incredibly got back to 5-5 behind Tom’s never-say-die attitude and Tracy’s spectacular defense of countless Lars overheads. From the bleachers you could see the anxious beads of sweat dripping form Lars’s beard tip as the lead slipped away. Somehow, Pam pulled them out of their spin and they held on for a tough 7-5, 7-5 win.
The last match of the night between Thomas/Thomas and Belser/Linde in 8.0 Seniors was as advertised. The tennis IQ in this foursome is high. They proved if you hit the ball with precision far enough away from somebody it’s an easy game and you don’t have to run much. The Thomas’ proved this with a simultaneous “yours!” call of a Linde lob that landed safely behind them for a winner to end the match and the night with laughs and smiles all around.
Remarkably there were twelve matches and not one went to a third set tie-breaker. Guaranteed, that trend won’t continue. There are 14 matches throughout today, starting at 12:30. It looks like the Karpinskis have demanded only to play other married couples, which they do twice today. They figure if they’re going to argue it will likely balance out on the other side. At 8:00 Donna Roisom and three teenagers will go at it. Remember, Donna, you’re in charge. Also at 8:00 is an appealing 7.0 match up between Lang/Nolan and Chin/Hendrickson. Check the schedule for your favorite players and come on out!

Tournament Day 2
Hello Irvington Club Member,
The Irvington Club Mixed Doubles Tournament is underway. The popularity and high entrant level of the event this year required a day early start. We eased into a week of anticipated play with five matches last night. All four courts were filled at 6:15 to kick off the event. For those fans who got word of the early opening and attended, there was no disappointment.
Court 1 featured an early 9.0+ marquee match up. The young Mark Mallory, sporting a new Ivan Lendlesque haircut, along with Donna Roisom took on Brian Sinclair and Lisa Lynch. On paper, it looked like a pretty even split. In reality, it was. There was the expected display of athleticism on both sides, impressive baseline power and deft net play by all. But it was Brian’s shot-of-the-night blind backhand from the curtain down the line for a clean winner that catapulted Sinclair and Lynch to a 6-3, 4-6,10-5 victory.
Court 2 brought the newly formed doubles team of Jamie Fenner and Blythe Knott against the experienced wedded pair, Dave and Sarah Schrott in an 8.0 match. The first set was tight. The bulls-eye Blythe wore was evident, and the targeting paid off with a 6-4 first set win for the Schrotts. A change of formation to the “I” in the second set for Fenner and Knott proved that a tall skilled man in the middle up front with Blythe’s forehand power in the back was a deadly combination, with them taking it 6-0. In the tie-breaker Jamie realized that the side nets were actually pulled back and he was free to roam side to side without fear of becoming entangled. He mobilized and Knott/Fenner pulled it out 10-5 to win the match.
Court 3 had a rare mother/son combination of Sharon and Stephan Malin pitted against the heady Brian Quisling and the steady Deirdre Harms in another 8.0 match up. It proved to be an uphill battle from the outset for the Malins. Oh, so close with multiple deuce games. A point here, a point there, it could have been a different story. It didn’t help either that after Stephan missed an easy put away volley in the first set Sharon sent him to his room for a half hour. Quisling/Harms prevailed 6-2, 6-1 and will move on as a potential favorite in the bracket.
Court 4 had a 6.0 match up of veterans Fletcher Frisch and Mary Stevenson against Megan and Andrew Barrett, one of 33 marriage-tester teams in the tournament this year. The crafty Frisch/Stevenson team effectively used the lobbing-into-the-lights technique to pull out the win 6-3, 6-2. And, happily, the Barretts did not break up.
The final 8.0 match of the evening on Court 1 had the father/daughter team of Bruce and the up-and-coming junior Isabel Robertson against Sherry Rogers and the already-up junior Alex Emerson. The big serve and baseline power of young Alex was impressive. As noticeable was the effortless handling of it by the even younger Isabel. Emerson/Rogers finished it 6-1, 6-1 in a match that was closer than the score. It was a fun match to finish the first night.
Friday night is huge. There are 12 matches slated. Check out the line up. Time slots are 5:00, 6:30 and 8:00. There are intriguing first round match ups all around. Look for the 8.0 Senior match of Thomas/Thomas vs. Belser/Linde to be a highlight. We should all watch and learn from our elders. Be there!

Tournament Day 1
Hello Irvington Club Member,
Great news……we are starting the Mixed Doubles Tournament tonight! Walter and Cris worked down to the wire trying to get all the matches scheduled and the only way to make it all happen was to try and play some matches Thursday night. Thanks to everyone that agreed to play on such short notice; we really appreciate it.
We will be sending email blasts daily and hope to give you highlights and match schedules. We have some special surprises for you this year so just plan on spending a lot of time here at the Club.
